It is a mandatory requirement that a Special Constable will complete 16 hours a month on average a year, every year. This is 200 hours in total per year.

Special Inspectors (S/Insp) leading teams of Special Sergeants, Special Constables and/or portfolios. They are responsible for developing their team whilst ensuring that organisational standards are met and agreed objectives are achieved.

 This role involves planning, managing and monitoring policing activity in relation to the Special Constabulary. Special Inspectors assist in the deployment of Special Constabulary resources to planned operations and incidents. They manage and mitigate risk in order ensure the safety and wellbeing of their officers. A Special Inspector does not have any additional legal powers to that of a Special Constable.

 Within Dorset Special Constabulary, there are currently eight S/Insp roles, seven are Geographical (BCP and County) and one sits over Operations/Specialisms.

 S/Insp are operational leaders and will build strong relationships with operational commanders and other strategic leaders to ensure the Special Constabulary is providing effective support to local policing, local communities and contributing to the Force vision, purpose, and priorities.

 S/Insp contribute to the development of culture, climate and working processes in their area to ensure adherence to standards, and the promotion of accountability and continuous improvement.
